How a Northville, MI Patio Converts to an Outdoor Kitchen ~Landscaping for Ann Arbor, Saline, Northville, Plymouth, Brighton, & Milford, MI~
What do you do if your patio is just blah but you want beautiful? You call your local landscape designer to create it for you.
In this case study, a Northville, MI family wanted to change their old, plain patio into an outdoor kitchen area where they could entertain family and friends. They called Treasured Earth Landscape Design & Build for their patio’s remodel.
The outdoor kitchen and living area had to be remodeled to accommodate night-time entertaining. The family’s goals for their outdoor kitchen included:
- Increase patio area
- Add outdoor lighting
- Add a kitchen area where food can be cooked
- Improve the flow and functionality of the patio area
- Introduce higher end materials for a classy look
- Install outdoor lighting for night-time entertaining. The lighting should have a dramatic effect and encourage a relaxing atmosphere for entertaining.
To begin with, the patio base needed to be replaced. The existing base consisted of broken concrete and the area was too small to entertain. Treasured Earth Landscape Design & Build replaced the old base with a new Unilock Torino™ Paver slab. The original, concrete patio was around 500 sq. ft. The new paver patio is now approximately 850 sq. ft.
After the slab was installed, the kitchen began to take shape. Treasured Earth Landscape Design & Build added an Ipe wood counter and granite tops. A barbeque and grill were added as cooking features. Plus, the refrigerator and storage cabinets built under the counter space and grill allows the family to keep food and beverages chilled for their party as well as store cooking supplies.
Seat walls were added near the cooking area to allow for extra seating as well as to highlight the upright beech trees.
Other landscaping included ornamental grasses for texture and to soften the patio area. Ornamental grasses were added along one side of the house that faces the patio area as well as in the boxed area with the beech trees. Additionally, Treasured Earth Landscape Design & Build added boxwoods for evergreen color and structure, lining the walkway from the patio to the rest of the backyard. The boxwoods added color to the kitchen area. For years to come, these boxwoods will grow and mature to add more depth, flow, texture and color to this Northville, MI home.
The installed outdoor lighting allows for this family to entertain well into the Michigan evening as well as to set the mood for their parties. The landscape crew installed outdoor lighting in the seat walls and fountain, as well as they put up sconces and wall lights.
You’ll notice that that there is uplighting for the beech trees—that not only highlights them—but adds a dramatic effect, drawing the eye upward to the night sky. The low lights within the seat walls help people see where they’re walking as well as set the mood for conversation. And the lighting by the cooking area allows the host to see what he is doing.
The hostess wanted to add a water feature to provide background falling water sounds as well as providing a calming visual. The stand-alone fountain is made from galvanized metal, and it plugs into one of the new outlets that were installed. And, lighting was added to the water feature to complement the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
Installing a new patio to include an outdoor kitchen is not an easy task. Since the outdoor kitchen is opposite from the house, the landscaping company needed to act as contractors to ensure that the gas, electric, drainage and other plumbing and electrical lines were properly installed.
Jim Meloche, president of Treasured Earth Landscape Design-Build, said,
“We had to run new gas lines, plumbing lines and electrical from the house. We had to bring these new lines up through the concrete counter foundation and fit all of them into the counter structure. Electrical lines were needed to service the barbeque and the new water feature.”
How did he and his crew solve this dilemma?
“Our electrical and plumbing subcontractors stepped up to get all of the lines installed while we were framing the counter.”
